Overview

What is the COA examination?

The Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation (COA) is examined under the Government Technical Examination (GTE) conducted by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The certificate is widely asked for in clerical, data entry and technical administrative posts in the state.

It is examined in two papers, each of one hour:

Theory — 50 marks, minimum 20 to pass. Objective throughout: multiple choice, multiple choice with two statements of logical thinking, match the following, and true or false.

Practical — 50 marks, minimum 20 to pass. One office-package task to execute, and submission of the output as a draft document in the e-Office application.

The syllabus behind it is set out unit by unit on the COA syllabus 2026 page.

Exam dates

COA exam date, application and hall ticket

The 2026 examination dates are not published on this page, because we will not guess them.

The Government Technical Examination is notified by the Department of Technical Education, and the notification carries the application window, the examination dates, the fee and the hall ticket release. Those are the only figures worth acting on. A coaching centre publishing an unverified date is how a candidate misses an application window and loses a year.

What to do instead:

Watch the official DOTE notification for the current spell, and contact the centre — we track each notification for our students and will tell you the current dates and help with the application. Students enrolled on the COA course are told when the window opens.

The syllabus notes that e-learning resources are published as a Learning Management System and notified on the DoTE website.

Preparation

How to prepare for each paper

Theory. Every question is objective and there are 40 of them in an hour, so recall speed matters more than depth. The weighting is fixed at 70% MS Windows and MS Office, 30% Linux and open source — the open source third is where most candidates lose marks, because they practise only on MS Office. Work through the one mark questions and model papers.

Practical. Split 50% office package, 50% e-Office. You execute the task, then submit the output as a draft document in e-Office and upload the relevant screenshots to the web application portal. Candidates who have only practised the office half tend to be caught by the submission half — it is worth as many marks as the work itself. The 1,000 practical exercises cover the office tasks.

Typing. Reaching 30 words per minute is certified as GTE Typewriting Junior Grade and 45 wpm as Senior Grade, on passing the course as prescribed — so typing practice earns a second certificate rather than only supporting this one. See typewriting.

Why CCE India

What the certificate is used for

Government posts in Tamil Nadu

The COA certificate is a recognised qualification for clerical, data entry and technical administrative roles in the state.

Typewriting grade alongside it

Hitting 30 or 45 wpm during the course is certified as GTE Typewriting Junior or Senior Grade in that language.

e-Office, which offices actually run on

Half the practical is e-Office file handling — receipts, noting, drafts, signing, dispatch. That is the day job in a government office.

Both office packages

MS Office and LibreOffice / OpenOffice are both examinable, so the certificate is not tied to one vendor.

FAQ

COA exam FAQ

When is the COA exam in 2026?

The date is set by the Department of Technical Education in its Government Technical Examination notification for each spell. We do not publish a date here until it is confirmed in that notification — an unverified date is worse than none. Contact the centre and we will tell you the current cycle dates.

What is the pass mark for the COA exam?

Twenty marks in each paper. The theory paper is 50 marks and the practical paper is 50 marks, so 20 out of 50 is needed in each, not a combined total.

How long is the COA exam?

One hour for the theory paper and one hour for the practical paper.

What types of question are in the COA theory paper?

Forty objective questions: 10 simple multiple choice for 1 mark each, 10 multiple choice with two statements of logical thinking for 2 marks each, 10 match the following for 1 mark each, and 10 true or false for 1 mark each.

What happens in the COA practical exam?

One question is an MS Office or open source office package task to execute, and the second is submitting the output of that task as a draft document in the e-Office application, with the relevant screenshots uploaded in the web application portal where applicable.

Where do I get the COA hall ticket and result?

Both are issued by the Department of Technical Education against the notification you applied under, on the dates given in it. Students who sat the exam through this centre can contact us for help.
